If a school, or a school employee, violates a student's rights, either the student or the student's parent or guardian can file a complaint to protect those rights. Generally, you can start a complaint at the school itself, then move up the hierarchy to your state's department of education if your complaint remains unresolved to your satisfaction. If you believe the school has discriminated against you or your child in violation of federal law, you can also file a complaint with the US Department of Education's Office of Civil Rights (OCR).
